Do Dental Implants Require Surgery?

Dental implants are a type of restoration that is implanted into the jawbone, where they can act as replacement roots for lost teeth. You may be a candidate for implants if you have lost one or more teeth and have good dental and general health. These are a permanent restoration and can preserve your smile and your dental health.

In order to have implants placed, you will need to undergo a minor surgical procedure. During this procedure, we may offer dental or IV sedation or general anesthesia to keep you comfortable. The procedure is fast and minimally invasive. Once the tissue is numbed, the implant will be inserted into the jawbone, and the tissues will be closed.

After the initial procedure, the implant will be allowed to heal. The bone will grow around the biocompatible implant until it is firmly fused into place in a process called osseointegration. Once the implant is secure in the jawbone, it will be uncovered in a second procedure, which can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation if necessary. An abutment will be attached to the implant. This abutment is used to secure the prosthetic tooth or teeth to the implant.
