Purpose of Using Dental Crowns

Crowns are restorations for lost or damaged teeth. Their use is restorative but overlaps with cosmetic dentistry as well. If you just lost a tooth, either to injury or illness, or you are experiencing tooth pain that may lead to a root canal, dental crowns can save you from further decay and bone loss, and from a smile you feel embarrassed about.

Crowns are primarily used when you have teeth available to be restored. This could mean a tooth after a root canal procedure, or a partially broken tooth that is still healthy enough to remain in the mouth. Crowns fortify existing tooth structure. Or in some cases, the tooth structure is modified to strengthen it. For example, if your tooth has a filling that has become too large due to tooth decay, a crown can build up that space.

Another common usage of crowns is for dental implants, the most advanced form of tooth replacement. After a titanium root is placed in the jaw or gum, a crown is screwed or cemented into place. This prosthetic looks as good as new, and the replacement root ensures normal dental function is possible.
